The Student Services Department facilitates support services to students, families, and the educational community in the areas of social-emotional health and well-being. Through systems of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) systems, we hope to create supportive learning environments for all students.

Our District's Commitment to Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

At Jefferson Elementary School District, we believe that a well-rounded education extends beyond academic achievement to foster the whole child. Our comprehensive TK-8 Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) core curriculum is designed to equip every student with the essential skills to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and thrive in school, career, and life.

This commitment aligns directly with the California Department of Education's (CDE) Transformative Social-Emotional Learning (T-SEL) Competencies. California recognizes SEL as a vital component of a high-quality education, promoting equity and preparing students for success in an increasingly complex world. JESD integrates the principles of T-SEL, emphasizing identity, agency, belonging, and collaborative problem-solving to cultivate caring, just, and inclusive school environments.

What is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)?

SEL is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to:

  • Understand and manage emotions: Recognizing one's feelings and how they influence behavior.
  • Set and achieve positive goals: Develop self-motivation and discipline to work towards personal aspirations.
  • Feel and show empathy for others: Understanding and sharing the feelings of others, appreciating diverse perspectives and cultures.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships: Communicating effectively, resolving conflicts constructively, and building healthy connections.
  • Make responsible decisions: Considering ethical implications, safety, and the well-being of self and others when making choices.

These five core competencies, based on the framework developed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), are woven into our daily school experience.

Why is SEL Important for Your Child?

Research consistently shows that SEL has a positive impact on students' well-being and academic success. Children who develop strong social-emotional skills demonstrate:

  • Improved academic performance: Better grades, attendance, and engagement in learning.
  • Enhanced self-awareness and self-management: Increased confidence, stress management, and emotional regulation.
  • Stronger relationships: Better communication, conflict resolution, and empathy towards others.
  • Responsible decision-making: The ability to make thoughtful and ethical choices.
  • Positive school climate: A greater sense of belonging, safety, and inclusivity.
  • Reduced behavioral issues: Less aggression and improved classroom behavior.

Beyond the classroom, these life skills are crucial for success in future careers and for becoming contributing members of society.

Our K-8 SEL Curriculum Overview

Our SEL curriculum is implemented through a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS), ensuring that all students receive universal SEL instruction, with targeted support available for those who need it.

Key Features of Our SEL Program:

  • Integrated into Daily Learning: SEL is not a standalone subject but is embedded across all academic areas, from English Language Arts and Social Studies to Science and Math. Teachers utilize literature, real-world scenarios, and collaborative projects to reinforce SEL concepts.
  • Dedicated SEL Instruction: We incorporate specific lessons and activities, often through daily classroom "openings", "meetings", or "circles," that provide explicit instruction in SEL competencies. These sessions foster a strong sense of community and allow students to practice their skills in a supportive environment.
  • Age-Appropriate and Developmentally Responsive: Our curriculum adapts to the unique needs of students at each grade level.
  • Culturally Responsive and Inclusive: Our SEL practices honor and leverage the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities of our students and families. We aim to create spaces where every student feels seen, valued, and respected.
  • Emphasis on Positive School Climate: We prioritize creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive school environment where students feel a sense of belonging and are encouraged to express themselves respectfully.
  • Family and Community Partnerships: We recognize the vital role families play in a child's social-emotional development. We provide resources and opportunities for families to engage in and reinforce SEL at home.

How Families Can Support SEL at Home:

The most effective SEL happens when school and home work together. Here are some ways you can support your child's social-emotional growth:

  • Talk about emotions: Encourage your child to express their feelings, both positive and challenging. Validate their emotions ("It's okay to feel sad/angry/frustrated").
  • Model positive social behaviors: Show empathy, kindness, and respectful communication in your own interactions.
  • Practice problem-solving: When faced with a challenge, talk through different solutions and their potential consequences. Allow your child to find their own solutions when appropriate.
  • Encourage healthy relationships: Discuss the importance of friendship, cooperation, and resolving conflicts peacefully.
  • Foster a sense of purpose and identity: Support your child's interests and help them connect with their cultural and personal identity.
  • Engage in community activities: Encourage your child to participate in activities that promote social connection and service to others.
  • Connect with your child's school: Stay informed about our SEL initiatives and ask your child's teacher about classroom practices.

Aligned with California Education Code

Our SEL curriculum is continually reviewed and updated to ensure alignment with the latest California Education Code guidelines and the CDE's Transformative Social-Emotional Learning (T-SEL) Competencies. These competencies emphasize the development of:

  • Self-Awareness: Understanding one's emotions, strengths, and values.
  • Self-Management: Regulating emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
  • Social Awareness: Empathizing with others and appreciating diversity.
  • Relationship Skills: Building and maintaining healthy relationships.
  • Responsible Decision-Making: Making thoughtful and ethical choices.

Furthermore, our practices are informed by California's commitment to Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), which includes restorative justice practices, trauma-informed practices, and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as integral components of fostering social-emotional well-being.

By nurturing our students' social and emotional growth, JESD is dedicated to empowering them to be confident, compassionate, and successful individuals who contribute positively to their communities.
